Dedicated to Service and Impacting Lives with Brother Gilbert
Nestled in the heart of the bustling Kibera slums is the serene Missionaries of Charity Brothers, a haven for many in the community. Stepping through the gate, we are greeted by groups of women engaged in lively conversations, patiently waiting for the day’s activities.
Navigating through the parking area, our host, Brother Gilbert Arioba, welcomes us with his characteristic beaming smile. Our last encounter was during the NGLP community service exercise in 2023, where NGLP scholars, alumni, and management collaborated in a service initiative at the Missionaries of Charity Brothers premises.
We inquire about the women at the gate, and Brother Gilbert explains that they provide weekly support to the vulnerable in the community. Taking a stroll around the institution, he shares the inspiring journey of his role as a formator and novice director at the Missionaries of Charity Brothers.
A beneficiary of the NGLP scholarship from the Chemchemi ya Uzima Institute, Brother Gilbert commits himself to transforming the lives of vulnerable children and adults. This commitment becomes evident as he guides us through the institution, introducing us to the individuals they support. “Servant leadership is about being on the ground, being humble and passionate. To make an impact in their lives, you must feel the pain and joy of the people you serve,” he affirms. The values of zeal and connection to serve with passion and mingle among them, instilled by the NGLP courses, are evident in his work.
Brother Gilbert highlights Child Protection as a standout NGLP course, emphasizing its role in shaping his perspective and influencing the institution’s support structure. Through creative approaches, he applied the knowledge gained to contribute to the policy of the Missionaries of Charity Brothers.
Expressing his enthusiasm for the NGLP community’s support, Brother Gilbert acknowledges the joy of giving and the contentment of touching souls. Brother James, an NGLP scholar at Amani Training Institute, plays a vital role in supporting HIV/AIDS victims and the elderly in the community, working closely with Brother Gilbert. “My training becomes invaluable as I navigate the challenges and stories from the people. It allows me to be a valuable resource and source of support to them,” shares Brother James.
As our visit concludes, Brother Gilbert passionately reinforces the importance of service and the transformative impact of the NGLP program on his life. “We need zealous servant leaders who emulate Christ in multiplying impact while remaining humble. This is the essence of the training I received at NGLP, and I hope more people get the opportunity to be transformed like I have been.”
