Empowering Leaders: Sister Theresia R. Mwimba’s Remarkable Journey
Sister Theresia R. Mwimba, stands as a shining example of the impact of the Next Generation Leadership Programme (NGLP). A dedicated alumna and a graduate of Mwenge Catholic University, Sister Theresia’s journey from student to leader is an inspiring narrative of empowerment and service.
For Sister Theresia, the path to NGLP began with word of mouth. She recalls, “I am a beneficiary of NGLP. I heard about it from a fellow beneficiary, who had also benefited from the program.” What struck her most was the unique approach NGLP took in nurturing its scholars. “We have many scholarships out here, but the way NGLP treats its scholars is special, and I loved it,” she affirms.
The program, spread over two years, offered a diverse curriculum that included leadership skills, child protection, executive management, and community service. It provided scholars with a holistic education that extended beyond academics.
Sister Theresia’s passion for child protection and awareness was greatly enhanced by the program. “In child protection, I learned how to protect children and create awareness in the community and among parents. Children have become victims of many things, and it’s crucial to protect their rights and educate them,” she notes.
The program also equipped her with essential skills, such as executive management, project management, and human resources. These skills have enabled her to excel in her career, organize seminars for teachers and employees, and manage projects efficiently.
Balancing her coursework and program activities posed a challenge due to the intensive nature of the program. However, Sister Theresia’s determination and time management skills allowed her to overcome this obstacle and thrive in her studies.
Reflecting on her personal growth, she emphasizes the importance of self-belief and humility in leadership. “A good servant leader is someone who is humble and listens, even to those below them,” she states, emphasizing the value of approachability and empathy in leadership.
Her colleague, Sister Honaratha L. Mhando, attests to Sister Theresia’s leadership prowess. “Sister Theresia has good leadership skills and is good at problem-solving, with outstanding results,” Sister Honaratha remarks, highlighting the transformation she has witnessed in Sister Theresia since her participation in NGLP which inspires her to also become a part of such a life-changing opportunity.
Sister Theresia acknowledges the economic support provided by the scholarship, which made her education possible. Beyond the financial aspect, she underscores the significance of the program’s interactions and activities in shaping her role as a servant leader.
Her advice to aspiring scholars is clear: “Value this scholarship, and you will devote yourself to excel in your studies and career. Participate in community service programs, as they contribute significantly to your adaptability in the working environment and interactions with others.”
Sister Theresia and her fellow NGLP alumni continue to stay connected, collaborating in various capacities and creating a supportive network. They serve as a beacon of hope for Tanzania’s leadership development, and they echo the sentiment that the continuation of NGLP is essential for nurturing future leaders.
Sister Theresia R. Mwimba’s journey exemplifies the profound impact of NGLP, not only in education but also in character development and leadership. Her story is a proof to the transformative potential of dedicated scholarship programs that empower individuals to be the change-makers and leaders of tomorrow.
