Transforming Lives Behind Bars: The Story of Alumnus Jacob
Jacob, a dedicated catechist working within the Kenya Prison Service, embarked on a transformative journey through the Next Generation Leadership Programme (NGLP). This program, designed to empower individuals and foster positive change, has significantly impacted Jacob’s life and career.
Having served as a catechist since 2012, Jacob’s passion for spiritual guidance and community development is evident. His enrollment in the NGLP in 2019 marked a pivotal moment, as he pursued a Bachelor of Arts in Youth Ministry at Tangaza University.
One of the most impactful courses Jacob encountered during his studies was Servant Leadership. This program instilled in him the importance of humility, empathy, and a commitment to serving others. Jacob’s newfound understanding of leadership has enabled him to connect with young people in prison, offering guidance and support.
Another crucial course, Child Protection and Safeguarding, equipped Jacob with the knowledge and skills to protect vulnerable young people. By understanding their rights and needs, he is better able to create a safe and nurturing environment within the prison setting.
Jacob’s dedication and compassion have not gone unnoticed. Lawrence Nango Ojang, a superintendent of prisons, praises Jacob’s humility and his ability to connect with others. He highlights the importance of the NGLP alumni network in fostering collaboration and supporting one another.
Tra Adul, a human rights officer, acknowledges Jacob’s significant contribution to youth ministry within the prison system. She credits him with revitalizing youth engagement and creating a positive impact on young people’s lives.
As Jacob continues his journey, he is encouraged to reach new heights and inspire others. The NGLP emphasizes the need for more scholarships to support prison officers in their professional development. By investing in these individuals, we can empower them to transform lives and create a more just and equitable society.
